Russian Missile and Drone Strikes Inflict Civilian Casualties Across Ukrainian Cities
Massive Russian attacks overnight on June 2 resulted in multiple deaths and injuries in Kyiv, Dnipro, Kharkiv amid escalating conflict tensions.
In the early hours of June 2, Russia launched a series of intense missile and drone strikes targeting key urban centers across Ukraine, resulting in civilian casualties and infrastructural damage. Ukrainian Air Force reports confirmed the use of Kalibr cruise missiles launched from the Caspian Sea as part of this coordinated attack.
The strikes come shortly after Russian President Vladimir Putin's statement on June 1, declaring that a recent Ukrainian attack on the annexed Lugansk region "added a new quality" to the ongoing war. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had warned of a potential large-scale retaliatory assault by Russia on Ukrainian cities.
Casualties and Damage Across Major Ukrainian Cities
Kyiv bore significant brunt of the attacks, with the city's mayor, Vitali Klitschko, reporting four fatalities and 51 injuries, 35 of which required hospitalization. Power outages were reported in three districts of the city. Timur Tkachenko, head of Kyiv's Military Administration, detailed that debris from a downed missile struck the roof of a residential building in the Podilskyi district, igniting a fire and shattering windows.
In Dnipro, local military administration chief Oleksandr Hanzha reported five deaths—including a 73-year-old woman—and 25 injuries. One of the strikes hit a residential neighborhood causing a fire.
Kharkiv also experienced attacks across two districts, with six injured, including an 11-year-old girl, according to regional governor Ihor Terekhov. Authorities across these cities continue documenting missile and drone debris impacts and assessing damages and casualties.
"The attacks resulted in tragic civilian losses and widespread disruption, highlighting the severe toll on urban populations amid an intensifying conflict," said a Ukrainian official.
Earlier, on the evening of June 1, Putin underscored the significance of the Ukrainian strike on Starobilsk in the annexed Lugansk region, which reportedly damaged a local college and caused the deaths of 21 students according to occupying authorities. This incident was cited as escalating the conflict’s intensity.
These recent assaults follow a large-scale attack on Kyiv and its surrounding region on May 24, when Russia utilized the "Oreshnik" type missile for the third time, causing two fatalities and injuring 80 people.
The ongoing hostilities and retaliatory strikes underscore the persistent volatility and high risk faced by Ukrainian urban centers, raising critical challenges for civil protection, emergency response, and strategic defense planning amid the conflict.
