Bavarian SPD Awards Yulia Navalnaya for Human Rights Advocacy Against Russian Authoritarianism

The Social Democratic Party (SPD) faction in Bavaria's Landtag has awarded Yulia Navalnaya the European Prize in recognition of her courageous resistance against the authoritarian Russian regime and her ongoing fight for human rights.
The award ceremony took place in Munich on June 29, where SPD faction leader Holger Grießhammer highlighted Navalnaya’s dedication as an inspiring example for those who aspire to live freely and democratically in Europe with respect for human rights.
Continuing the Fight After Tragedy
Following the violent death of her husband, opposition leader Alexei Navalny, in February 2024, Yulia Navalnaya has not retreated but intensified her activism against the regime of Russian President Vladimir Putin. Her resilience exemplifies a commitment to democratic principles despite immense personal loss.
"I believe that Russia is connected to Europe not only by shared history but by fundamental values, and that it must move toward a future grounded in democracy, human rights, and the rule of law," Navalnaya said during the award ceremony at the Bavarian Landtag.
She expressed gratitude to Europe for defending these values and supporting those who uphold them, affirming her resolve to continue working toward a free and peaceful Russia.
The European Prize, awarded annually by the SPD faction in Bavaria since 2018, recognizes individuals who have made outstanding contributions to advancing the ideals and values of the European Union.
