Protests in Kyiv Demand Reinstatement of Former Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov Amid Leadership Changes

On August 16, protests resumed in Kyiv and several other Ukrainian cities, with hundreds of participants demanding the reinstatement of Mykhailo Fedorov as Ukraine's Minister of Defense. This marks the 32nd consecutive day of such demonstrations, illustrating persistent public dissatisfaction with recent leadership changes in Kyiv's defense and veteran affairs sectors.
Public Discontent Over Recent Government Appointments
The protest, described by some Ukrainian outlets as a "protest action in support of dialogue and reforms in the defense sector," witnessed demonstrators gathering at Kyiv's centrally located Freedom Arch, formerly known as the Arch of Peoples' Friendship until May 2022. From there, the crowd marched along Khreshchatyk Street, the Alley of the Heavenly Hundred Heroes, and Olhynska Street, concluding with a rally at Ivan Franko Square near the Office of the President.
"The protest column stretched for hundreds of meters along the central streets of the capital," reported local media, highlighting the scale and diversity of participants, which skewed toward younger demographics.
Protest slogans voiced attendees' support for Fedorov's leadership and opposition to some recent appointments made by President Volodymyr Zelensky. Specifically, the decision to appoint former Defense Minister Rustem Umerov as head of the Foreign Intelligence Service and Vitaliy Kim, former head of the Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration, as Minister for Veterans Affairs drew sharp criticism.
Slogans such as "Fedorov!", "Umerov - devil!", and "Veterans, not Kim!" underscored the protesters' message. Calls for continued European integration and skepticism toward remnants of Soviet-era influence were also prominent.
Similar protests were reported in other major Ukrainian cities including Lviv, Dnipro, Lutsk, Rivne, Poltava, Odesa, Vinnytsia, Khmelnytskyi, and Chernivtsi, indicating a widespread movement beyond the capital.

At the culmination of the Kyiv protest, participants submitted a petition to a representative of the President's Office. The petition calls for the continuation of reforms initiated under Fedorov’s tenure at the Ministry of Defense and urges the government to engage in open dialogue with the public.
Dmytro Kozyatynskyi, a veteran and one of the protest organizers, emphasized at the rally that Ukraine has yet to fill the key cabinet positions of Defense Minister and Foreign Minister, highlighting ongoing governance gaps at a critical time.
