Russia’s Renewed Strikes Across Ukraine Result in Civilian Casualties and Infrastructure Damage

On July 2, Russia continued its aggressive military campaign against Ukraine with a series of air and drone strikes hitting several key regions throughout the day and evening. These assaults followed a massive nighttime attack on Kyiv, reportedly the deadliest since the conflict began.

Widespread Targeting of Civilian and Strategic Sites

The attacks struck multiple oblasts including Kherson, Zaporizhzhia, Dnipropetrovsk, Mykolaiv, Kharkiv, and Sumy, leading to both civilian casualties and damage to critical infrastructure. Local officials reported fatalities and injuries caused by strikes on residential areas, medical facilities, educational institutions, and commercial properties.

In Kherson, a 41-year-old man was killed by a missile strike on a civilian vehicle during the afternoon, according to regional military administration head Oleksandr Prokudin. A 63-year-old physician died when a medical facility was hit, and a nurse was wounded. Later that evening, another resident died after inadvertently triggering explosives while mowing grass. Prokudin noted that drone raids continued late into the night, including an attack near the Kherson oil refinery.

Zaporizhzhia experienced strikes on a residential building, a retail storage facility, a sorting center for a national postal service, and a sports complex. Seven people were wounded in the attacks, including children aged six, seven, twelve, and sixteen, as reported by regional governor Ivan Fedorov.

In the Dnipropetrovsk region, drone, artillery, aerial bomb, and missile attacks killed two people, one of whom was a seven-year-old girl. Nine others, including children aged eleven and fourteen, were injured. Damage was reported to apartment blocks, private homes, a gymnasium, and vehicles, according to the oblast's governor Oleksandr Velychko.

Mykolaiv authorities reported fatalities and injuries after Shahed drones targeted a gas station area. One person died and seven were wounded. The strikes destroyed a gas station building and damaged private homes and vehicles.

Kharkiv also came under bombardment with one strike hitting a high-rise residential building. Three individuals were injured in the city, and damage was inflicted on a gas station and several automobiles.

Sumy was targeted by three guided aerial bombs causing substantial damage to a school in a residential area. Eleven people sought medical assistance, including three children. Although no students were present during the strike, two school employees were injured. Further, a driver and a postal worker were wounded when a postal vehicle was attacked by drones.

In the Donetsk region city of Kramatorsk, one person was injured by a drone strike on a vehicle.

"The continuous targeting of civilian infrastructure signals a deliberate strategy to inflict widespread disruption and casualties beyond the immediate battlefield," noted an expert on military conflict dynamics.

The renewed wave of strikes highlights the sustained intensity of Russia’s military operations and the challenges faced by Ukrainian authorities in protecting civilians and critical infrastructure. The attacks come amidst ongoing efforts by Ukrainian leadership to manage both the humanitarian and strategic consequences of the conflict.
