Ukrainian President Zelensky Nominates Sergey Koretsky as Prime Minister Amid Cabinet Reshuffle
President Zelensky has officially proposed Sergey Koretsky for prime minister, with the parliament set to confirm the new government and ministerial lineup on July 16.
On July 16, Ukraine's parliament, the Verkhovna Rada, is set to vote on the confirmation of Sergey Koretsky as the new Prime Minister, following a nomination by President Volodymyr Zelensky. This announcement was made by the parliament's speaker Ruslan Stefanchuk, marking a key executive decision at a critical juncture for Ukraine's government.
Transition in Executive Leadership and Cabinet Restructuring
Just two days prior, on July 14, the Verkhovna Rada accepted the resignation of former Prime Minister Yuliya Svyrydenko, which automatically triggered the resignation of the entire Cabinet. Svyrydenko had led the government since July 17, 2025, overseeing strategic policy initiatives during a turbulent period.
The selection of Koretsky followed a thorough vetting process, where four candidates were initially considered for the premiership: Sergey Koretsky, the chairman of Naftogaz; Denis Shmyhal, current Minister of Energy; Mykhailo Fedorov, Minister of Defense; and Ihor Terekhov, Mayor of Kharkiv. After careful consultations, President Zelensky concluded that Koretsky was the most suitable candidate to lead the government moving forward.
"After all consultations, Sergey Koretsky emerged as the most fitting candidate for Prime Minister," President Zelensky stated.
The parliamentary vote for the new prime minister and the accompanying cabinet is planned for the same day, July 16. The new Cabinet lineup is largely known, signaling a strategic reshuffle within key ministries.
One of the most notable changes is the replacement of Mykhailo Fedorov as Minister of Defense. He is expected to be succeeded by Ihor Klymenko, who currently heads the Ministry of Internal Affairs. Subsequently, Ivan Vygovsky is anticipated to take over Klymenko's role at the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
Meanwhile, Andriy Sybiha is set to retain his position as Minister of Foreign Affairs, maintaining continuity in Ukraine's diplomatic engagements during a period of significant internal government restructuring.
