German CSU Leader Advocates for Acquisition of Ukrainian Drone Technology to Boost Bundeswehr Capabilities

Alexander Hoffmann, chair of the Bavarian Christian Social Union (CSU) parliamentary group in the Bundestag, has urged the German government to secure an intergovernmental agreement with Ukraine to acquire cutting-edge combat drone technologies developed by Kyiv. Hoffmann’s statements, published in an interview on July 25, emphasize the strategic advantages Germany could gain by integrating Ukrainian innovations into its defense portfolio.

Strengthening Germany’s Defense Through Strategic Technology Partnerships

The CSU, together with the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), forms the conservative bloc currently leading Germany's governing coalition alongside the Social Democratic Party (SPD). “Germany must participate in these arms innovations to strengthen its own defense and deterrence capabilities,” Hoffmann stated. “That is why we call for an intergovernmental agreement with Kyiv, where Ukraine commits to sharing its technological expertise with us.”

Hoffmann highlighted Ukraine’s remarkable progress in drone warfare, counter-UAV defenses, and cruise missile technologies, asserting that these represent critical assets that could significantly enhance the Bundeswehr’s operational readiness.
